Stamped Concrete Driveways
How to Pour Stamped Concrete – Biondo Cement’s Stamped Concrete Driveway Installation Process
1. Tear out the existing driveway and prepare the area to pour cement.
Our crews will arrive on the first day of the job with all the necessary equipment to tear out and remove the old driveway. Next, forms are set in place, defining the area in which your stamped concrete will be. We ask that homeowners be present on the first day of the job to approve the forms, so we can ensure that you get precisely the design you want. We then lay down 21AA crushed concrete and carefully compact it to provide a sufficient base. After that, we install a steel rod reinforcements throughout the entire project. This will add additional structural integrity to the finished product.
2. Mix base color into cement truck, pour the concrete and finish smooth.
Once the forms are all set, we’re ready to pour! Concrete trucks arrive, and the base color you choose will be added into the cement mix and thoroughly incorporated. Then the pouring begins. After we pour the cement, our skilled concrete craftsman will use a screed to smooth the surface of the concrete carefully. It’s essential to create a perfectly smooth working surface for stamping.
3. Broadcast the secondary color (releaser) across the surface and stamp the pattern of your choice.
Once the cement has been poured and properly finished, the stamping process can begin. First, we broadcast a release powder across the surface of the concrete. Release powder serves a twofold purpose: First, it prevents the stamp forms from sticking to the cement. Secondly, it adds additional pigment to the color of the concrete surface, which richens and adds depth to the appearance of the stamp. As a result, it enhances the beauty of the finish. The final step is to stamp the concrete. Stamping is a delicate process, and our crews train extensively to use proper techniques to ensure a flawless and elegant final product.
4. Allow the cement to harden overnight then return to power wash the excess release powder and saw cut the entire driveway.
After completing stamping, we allow the cement to harden overnight. We will return the following day to power wash the surface of the cement, removing any excess releaser. Then, we use specialized diamond-cut sawblades to cut expansion joints into the driveway. Wide fluctuations in temperature, common to southeast Michigan, cause cement to expand and contract, which can result in cracked cement. By cutting expansion joints, you give the concrete flexibility to move, which will help prevent damage.
5. Return the following day to stain and seal revealing the beauty of your stamped concrete driveway installed by Biondo Cement.
The last step in the process is to stain and seal the driveway. The stain of your choice will be applied evenly to the border, accenting the design by adding contrast and giving the concrete an elegant, finished look. Finally, a sealant will be applied to the entire surface, adding an additional layer of protection to your concrete. The finish, whether matte or glossy, is entirely up to your preference. Your driveway is now complete, and after 24 hours, it will be ready to serve all your parking needs! Are you interested in a driveway by Biondo Cement? Call us today for a FREE in-home estimate!
